Volunteer Opportunities

We are always looking for new volunteer tutors to share their time and to experience the joy of teaching and learning with us! We ask for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours of your time each week. You can become a tutor and change two lives - an adult learner's and your own! Training, curriculum and materials provided. JCLC provides small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring for U.S. Citizenship, English as a Second Language, basic skills (reading, writing & math), GED preparation and basic computer skills.

Tutor Training

In order to ensure that our volunteers are adequately prepared to help individuals with literacy challenges in our community, the Jefferson County Literacy Council provides training for prospective volunteer tutors. We ask that prospective volunteers attend an orientation session (1 hour), complete two online tutorials (2 hours), attend a tutor training session (4 hours) and complete one or two observations of JCLC classes or tutoring sessions (1.5-3 hours).

Once tutors have completed the requirements and are placed with learners in a one-on-one arrangement or with a small group, staff maintains contact with the tutor and learner to provide materials, support and assessment. JCLC also leads some optional continuing education opportunities throughout the year, such as book studies, citizenship instructor training, organization goal-oriented information sessions and more.

JCLC hosts tutor training dates three times each year.  All sessions take place at the JCLC office (Jefferson Area Business Center building - 218 S. Wisconsin Drive, Jefferson, WI). Advanced registration is required for participation. Please call our office to register (920) 675-0500 or e-mail jclcinfo@jclc.us. You are also welcome to apply to become a volunteer online by completing our online registration form.
